CARTIER. AN UNUSUAL LADY'S 18K GOLD RECTANGULAR WRISTWATCH WITH BRACELET AND LAPIS LAZULI DIAL
Cartier Although Louis-Francois Cartier began his jewellery business in 1847, it was not until 1888 that women's jewellery watches were first produced. Cartier developed their line of watches slowly, beginning with the prototype for the Santos, which is believed to have been produced in 1904 for Brazilian Aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Cartier's trademark deployant buckle was developed in 1909 and the Santos wristwatch was launched in 1911. Known for their carefully crafted desk clocks, Cartier created the frist Mystery Clock in 1913. Perhaps more importantly, the company launched the famous Tank model wristwatch in 1919. A timeless classic, the Tank has been worn by everyone from Elsie de Wolf, Rudolph Valentino and Barbara Hutton to Andy Warhol and Jacqueline Kennedy. During the 1980s, Cartier developed a host of popular wristwatch designs including the Panthere in 1984, the Pasha in 1985, and the Tank Americaine in 1989. Today, Cartier remains a hallmark of sophisticated taste and high quality in the watch market.
