One of the blued-iron contact plates is mounted on a flat piece of brass, in turn mounted within a rectangular frame. The other contact is mounted on the frame, and the flat piece is moved by means of a micrometer screw mounted beneath. There are scales and verniers for millimetres and inches, the latter with attached steel scale and vernier. The frame is raised on four turned legs to an identical rectangular frame base. The fitted case has green felt lining (hooks, eyes and key missing)
