An unusal late 19th-Century/early 20th-Century folk-art planeterium,
unsigned, made from metal, paper and wood -- 30.5cm. (12in.) high
See Colour Illustration
The sphere is comprised of a fixed ebonised vertical circle with two paper labels inscribed in manuscript Verticaal Circel (half of one missing). A metallic paint-finished steel circle is fixed at a slight angle and labelled similarly Meridian and Noord Pool and Zuid Pool. A brass rod runs between the poles, surmounted by a turned, gilt-painted wooden arrowhead, with a similar sunball at the centre, and a pointed sphere at the base. There is a similar black band movable through a right angle to the first, labelled Horizontaal and a thicker red-painted metal band also movable. This is labelled Aequator with hours VII-XII, I-V and VII-XII, I-V (several missing). The other side of the band passes through three card drums painted red and applied each with four pictorial representations of the houses of the Zodiac with labels, all in manuscript. The sphere is mounted on small turned wooden support on four scroll-shaped brass supports on circular wooden base. Between the supports is a brass-cased glazed compass with needle and jewelled cap. The wooden base is applied with colourful paper decorations and labels for eighteen cities of the world, each with a short hour scale depending on location. The edge of this base is covered by a metal ring, applied with labels showing flags and names of 19 (of 21) countries. The base is mounted on a wider wooden circle, also applied with hand-drawn flags (most worn away) and egded in red.
