A late 19th-Century oxidised-brass surveying level and tripod,
signed Troughton & Simms, London, in a mahogany carrying case -- 47.8cm. (18 7/8in.) wide

The level has two bubbles mounted on top, objective dust cover and rack and pinion eyepiece focusing. It is mounted over a glazed compass with finely stamped circumference scale and clamp, and raised on a removable mounting for the mahogany tripod, with four adjustable screw feet. The fitted case has a spare eyepiece, a mirror attachment and a magnifier for the compass scale. There is some green felt lining, two brass hooks and eyes, key and strap handle.

According to the vendor, this instrument was used by an army Colonel in the building of railways in India. It was subsequently used to make surveys for the laying of early underground railway lines in London.
