Details
An unusual late 18th-Century/early 19th-Century ivory desk tool,
incorporating a perpetual calendar and surmounted by the head of Shakespeare -- 12cm. (4¾in.) long
See Colour Illustration
The seal at the base of the handle unscrews to facilitate the moving of a ring around the shaft, marked with initials for the days of the week. This ring can then be set against the numbered grid around the rest of the handle to align the day of the week with the correct date of whichever month one chooses. Shakespeare's head unscrews to be used as an eraser, the sharp steel knife fitting into the handle when not in use.
