Lot Essay

The prototype of this piece was discovered near Padstow in Cornwall and may possibly be one of the first guns in this country to be cast from iron. The design follows closely contemporary bronze cannon, particularly in the amount of decoration. It is mounted on a carriage which, at that period, was used both in the field as a siege weapon and in a fortress defensively.
