A fine Napoleon III ormolu-mounted tulipwood, ebonised and marquetry-inlaid mantel Circa 1860
Surmounted by a dove sat upon a spherical clock with Roman chapters and twin-train movement, stamped Barrard & Vignon/FCT D'HORLOGERIE/PARIS, flanked by a pair of recumbent scantily-draped nymphs suspending a garland, the spreading cornice centred by a female mask and splayed torches, the angles with scrolled acanthus chutes, above a panelled frieze with canted corners, inlaid with spring flowers, the arched surround framed with egg-and-dart moulding and conforming floral marquetry panels, the black-painted fireback cast in relief with figures and strapwork, the angles with female espagnolettes, the sides with rectangular marquetry panels

Lot Essay
Tardy lists the Parisian horlogers, Barrard et Vignon, as operating from rue Neuve Ménilmontant in 1860, and later from rue Commines (see Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, p. 31).
