The slightly breakfront-shaped white marble top with black inclusions, with moulded edge and rounded corners, above a conforming frieze cast with scrolling vine, putti, goats, and a Bacchic mask, set with three drawers, above three panelled crotched mahogany cupboard doors, each opening to an adjustable shelf, the front corners with fluted uprights, the sides with a similar fielded panel, on toupie feet, the carcass stamped JEANSELME

Lot Essay

From its founding in 1824, the Parisian firm of Jeanselme was one of the foremost ateliers until its demise in 1930. Their most prestigious moment occurred in 1847 when they purchased the workshops of Jacob. In the mid-19th century they received several commissions to furnish palaces, including Fontainebleau and the Palais Royal.

Another commode of this model, by the firm of Durand, was sold Christie's Paris, 17 June 2003, lot 76 (72,850 Euros).
