Between 1825 and 1831, Barye modelled two sets of four bas-reliefs, each conceived as decorative embellishment for clocks or marble socles. Élan courant, the present title, belongs to the first set, which was edited by Eck et Durand, the Parisian fondeurs in operation from 1838-1863.
Another cast of Élan courant, formerly in the collection of Eduardo Guinle (d. 1941), was sold in these rooms, 25 April 2003, lot 104 ($1,675).
