Panthère de l'Inde No2 and its pendant, Panthère de Tunis No2, were first offered in Barye's 1857-8 catalogue. Shortly after, both works were slightly re-modelled, increased in size and offered from 1860 as Panthère de l'Inde No1 (see lot 195) and Panthère de Tunis No1. Whilst the number of lifetime épreuves of the panthères was not great, posthumous casts by Barbedienne of all four models were particularly popular and numerous.
