The palace at Sanssouci was originally built by Frederick the Great and later, in the 19th century, his great nephew, Friedrich Wilhelm IV continued improvements on both the building and the grounds. Although there were numerous palaces in Potsdam, the steam-powered fountain at Sanssouci proved to be one of the greatest tourist attractions. By 1838 train service between Berlin and Potsdam was established enabling the public access. This particular view of the palace was a popular subject for artists of the time, including Carl Daniel Freydanck.
