See Joan Jones, Minton The First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, p 208 for a pair of vases of this shape (no. 2443) by Birks and p. 200 for the vase exhibited by Minton at the Paris Exhibition of 1878, designed by Carrier-Belleuse and decorated by Marc Louis Solon, for a frieze of putti hammering at chains, obviously the inspiration for the present piece
