Lot Essay

The painting that this plaque is based on was executed in 1751 by François Boucher and is now in the National Gallery in Washington D.C. It was at one time in the Collection of M. le Baron Alfred de Rothschild. In 1932, the painting was sold at the Anderson Galleries' auction of Lady Curzon's Collection, for $31,000. It was purchased by Chester Dale, a collector and great philanthropist and later given to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
