etching, 1884, on simili Japon, an early working proof before the first published edition, before the image was burnished at the bottom and the Klackner publication line and remarques, signed 'Winslow Homer' and dated '1884' in the plate at the lower left, annotated 'W1' and 'Copyright, 1884, by Winslow Homer' in the plate at the lower right, with margins, the paper tone slightly darkened, a repaired horizontal cut in the paper along the upper center margin edge, a few repaired small tears and creases along the extreme left and right margin edges, a few spots of pale foxing (heavier on the reverse), traces of surface soiling, otherwise in good condition
