Each cup finely potted with straight sides, enamelled on the exterior with flowering prunus branches and sprays of bamboo, inscribed with a couplet and three ruby-red seal marks, the base bearing an apocryphal four-character hallmark, Yanghe Tangzhi, 'Hall where Harmony is Nurtured', within a double square in iron-red

Lot Essay

The present cups are decorated in the early Qing style that was known by the mysterious name of guyuexuan, 'The Jade Moon Pavilion'. Each cup is inscribed with a short inscription elucidating its accompanied painted scene. In this instance the two-line poem may be translated as:
As jade blades brightly lance;
scattered is the floating fragrance.
