A FINE CARVED BAMBOO LUOHAN GROUP
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
Carved in openwork with a Luohan seated on a semi-circular stool, the head tilted to one side, modelled as an 'ascetic' the figure is finely detailed with sunken eyes, high cheek-bones, growing a curly beard and hair combed in ringlettes, dressed in a flowing robe partially exposing the protruding ribs and the skeletal arm, the body leaning slightly forward with one hand holding a scroll, the other calming a playful tiger, carved with a wang character on its forehead and mouth agape, clambering for attention, the patina of a deep chestnut-brown tone (old repairs in places)
