QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Each domed peach-form cover is finely carved through thick layers of cinnabar-red lacquer with one Daoist immortal with two attendants standing under a tree in a river landscape, all within a border of five bats, peaches and flowers, the high rounded sides of the boxes and covers with composite floral meanders, the base and interior lacquered black (extremity chips)

It is rare to find set of four peach-form cinnabar lacquer box of the same design, a similar example carved of three-coloured lacquer was sold in these Rooms, 28 October 2002, lot 599.
