Lot Essay

Previously sold in these Rooms, 22 March 1993, lot 614.

Lanterns of this large size were probably used suspended from the ceiling similar to the hanging example from the imperial wedding chamber in the Palace of Earthly Repose, illustrated by Wen Wan-go and Yang Boda, Treasures of the Forbidden City, p. 56, whilst smaller related examples are placed on side tables similar to the pair on pedestals, illustrated loc. cit.. Also cf. a pair of smaller zitan lanterns sold in these Rooms, 30 September 1992, lot 956.
