Lot Essay

The archaistic carving on the present lot relates well with that on a few other yellow jade vessels: another gu-shaped vase carved in the round as a group with animals, in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in Jadeware (III), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 55; a baluster vase, similarly decorated with taotie masks and archaistic scrolls, also in the Palace Museum, Beijing, and illustrated ibid., pl. 66; and a circular tablet, gui, with stylistically similar scrollwork, sold in these Rooms, 7 July 2003 (Catalogue dated 28 April 2003), lot 758.
