A man of spirit with a keen sense of adventure Edward Dodson numbered amongst his skills, as a young man, that of taxidermy. This earned him a place on A. Donaldson Smiths' African expedition from Somaliland to Lake Lamu during 1894/5, when his skills were called upon regularly. The expedition was full of hazards and an account 'Through Unknown African Countries' was published by Donaldson Smith in 1897. Dodson is praised regularly as a thoroughly reliable and energetic member of the team. Later on he led his own expeditions in Tripoli and central Patagonia. However, his health broke down in 1900 and further plans had to be abandoned. Inventive and possessed of engineering skills Dodson designed the famous 'Zenith' carburettor for engines and the special laminated wooden propellor for World War I aircraft
