Lot Essay

The first is after the picture in the National Gallery, London; and The second is after the fresco painted by Veronese for the choir of the church of S Sebastiano, Venice, to substitute an earlier, damaged fresco of the same subject. Since 1856 the location of the original has been untraced, and the composition is today known only from an engraving by Cochin. Four other copies are known: that in the Galleria dell' Accademia, Venice; that in the Galleria di Parma; that in the Pinacoteca di Rovigo; and that with Drey, Munich, 1924.
