The flush-fitting lid with rounded corners and edges, the exterior sumi-aka [red lacquered cloth] ground, the top of the cover and four sides of the box flanked with panels of black lacquer decorated in two-colour gold takamaki-e, depicting Shimazu mon, peonies and scrolling foliage, a ring-fitting in the shape of the same mon on each side, the interior nashiji ground, fundame rims, the base with sparse nashiji, some chips to rim
