An Impressive Pair of Kakiemon Vases
Edo Period (Late 17th Century), the mounts 18th Century
Of rectangular form, decorated in iron-red, brown, green, yellow, blue and black enamels and gilt depicting various birds amongst bamboo, plum blossom, pine, chrysanthemum and rockwork, the rounded shoulders with a band of hanabishi, the necks with applied European gilt mounts, slight hairline cracks

A similar pair with covers and ormolu mounts from the Prince de Condé Collection in the Musée du Louvre are illustrated in Oriental Ceramic Society, Porcelain for Palaces: The Fashion for Japan in Europe, 1650-1750 (London, 1990), no. 149, which mentions two other pairs in the State Rooms at Windsor Castle and in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Another similar pair in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, is illustrated in Christiaan J.A. Jorg, Fine & Curious (Amsterdam, 2003), no. 211, p. 175.
