Signed Yoshitsugu (Probably Osaka), Edo-Meiji Period (Mid-Late 19th Century)
Of a very finely modelled adult hare and its offspring, the smaller creature's polished surface contrasting with the minute hairwork on the adult which also has three inlaid areas of ebony indicating piebald markings, the himotoshi formed by the junction of the adult's right legs and the smaller creature's back legs, signed with incised characters on the side of the adult's right haunch Yoshitsugu

Lot Essay

Despite the use of wood rather than ivory, the overall character of the modelling, the high finish and the inlaid amber eyes suggest that this fine carving is by a follower of the great Kaigyokusai Masatsugu of Osaka
