Signed Kaigyoku [Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892)]
Carved in the form of a pair of Nio [guardian figures], placed on either side of the entrance gate to a Buddhist temple

Lot Essay

Kaigyokusai Masatsugu was among a group of netsuke carvers who made sword mounts. A similar pair of menuki by Kaigyokusai sold in these Rooms, The Hartman Collection of Japanese metalwork, 30th June 1976, Lot 503.
