A Wakizashi Blade
Unsigned, Attributed to Higo Enju School, Muromachi Period (15th Century)
The blade honzukuri, iorimune, koshi-zori with chu-kissaki, forging pattern tsukare itame, tempered edge hoso suguha with ko-nie, kinsuji, midare boshi, a broad groove each side, tang o-suriage nakago with two holes, nagasa 21 7/8in. (55.6cm.), in a handachi mounting, the scabbard covered with stamped and gilt Spanish leather, hilt bound in brown, a pair of shibuichi menuki of puppies with silver inlay, handachi mounts inlayed with silver scrolls, the shibuichi kozuke decorated in iroe takazogan with a goose flying over water, the iron tsuba pierced with matsukawabishi, faintly signed Joshu ju Shigenari, overall length 31½in. (80.6cm.)
