Lot Essay
The works of Abdul Aziz have a special position in the Tahir collection, not only because of the special relations between the artist and the collector but he is the only known Indonesian artist who adopts a 3 dimensional painting style which propelled an effect that makes the subject seemingly leaning forward.
Abdul Aziz had spent some time in Italy for his training in art and it was during this period that he got to know the collector really well and sold her some of his early works. A man with diverse interests and talents, Abdul Aziz eventually went on to concentrate in dance and music, hence the rarity of his works.
A Balinese artist and proud to be one, Abdul Aziz rarely painted non-Balinese scene in his works. The Balinese girls, the quiet lane or the bustling market place in Bali were the portraits of the island in reality, essence and spirit. The present lot which was intended as a pair of canvas, portrayed the couple enclosed in their own space yet reaching out for one another. Abdul Aziz cleverly uses the characteristic of the physical material of a canvas to enhance the sense of an enclosure of the couple, thus allowing the possibility of the play with the 'reaching out' effect. The man, in this instance is the initiator in the pursuit with his body posture veering towards the damsel who poised elegantly with a coy smile, aware of the attention and is delighted with it.
