The subject of Mencari Kutu is a highly emotive one for many of the Modernists in Indonesian Art. The modernist movement is very much a search for a distinct Indonesian identity and by that definition, many daily scenes of the common Indonesian people assume a significance role in defining 'Indonesianess'.
The inherent problem of emphasizing too much of the daily routines is to have a subject that might be considered as too parochial or provincial, lacking in universal appeal.
Nevertheless, the reverse is true.
A subject that is seemingly common and mundane is very well the image that embodies the essence of the land, the people and the culture.
Mencari Kutu is the common scene of women catching the lice in each other's hair, a routine of the village folks, an experience that is shared by many in Indonesia. It is no coincidence that most artists, including sculptors select the subject for their works as it is evocative of the land and the people and more importantly, a community that is closest to their herats. In this aspect, Mencari Kutu ceases to be only a subject for the artists but a classic image of a time gone by.
