Lot Essay

A significant figure in the contemporary Indonesian art scene, Heri Dono is known for using his works as cynical social commentary, addressing issues in the social, political and cultural arenas. Self-made plane is a blatant criticism on the former Indonesian President, Habibie's preoccupation of setting up the plane-manufacturing factory, the PT Dirgantara Indonesia in Bandung.

The island of Java is depicted in the work in a deformed and monstrous shape ruled by the pirates. On the upper right section of the work is a rudimentary looking plane, flying towards a voluptuous female figure, a comical satire of the lightheartedness taken for the building of a national industry. Habibie himself is seen in the work on the upper left of the painting, riding on a bicycle and laughing.
