Lot Essay

"In the case of the pinballs, the visual raisonné d'être is to express light coming from within the painting instead of over your shoulder. To give the feeling of a pinball machine glowing in a dark corner of a bar is impossible, unless I actually put the machine in a dark corner of the studio and I run back and forth fifty feet just to get a look. I can't do that, so I work from a photograph or photographs- I use a composite of many." -Charles Bell in conversation with Henry Geldzahler
