The artist, by whom approximately twenty signed works are recorded in the RKD, has traditionally been identified as Jan Snellinck III (1640-1691). However, it is likely that the Monogrammist IS can be identified instead as Jan Spanjaert (c. 1590-1664), who is recorded as a painter of genre scenes in Delft. He was active in Amsterdam after 1644.
