Lot Essay

The mysterious subject of the present drawing is similar to a painting by de Lairesse in a private collection, London, tentatively identified by Alain Roy as Atalanta and Hippomenes or Athena defending a young man from the temptations of Bacchus, Venus and Cupid (A. Roy, Gérard de Lairesse (1640-1711), Paris, 1992, no. P50).
