Lot Essay

From Ploos van Amstel's monumental series of etchings after drawings in his collection and printed in a technique of his own devising that created extremely faithful facsimiles. The original series of sixty-seven plates was continued after Ploos' death by Christiaan Josi (d. 1828) who added a further fifty plates, mainly after drawings not originally in Ploos' colection, including the two after Jacob van Ruisdael in the present lot. The series is discussed in detail in T. Laurentius, J.W. Niemeijer and G. Ploos van Amstel, Cornelis Ploos van Amstel-Kunstverzamelaar en prentuitgever, Assen, 1980, abbreviated as L.N.B. above.
