With gilt brass verge movement, finely engraved and pierced cock and foot, plain three arm steel balance, chain fusée, in plain inner case, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, the outer case with chased and embossed geometrical and blue and white enamel decoration to bezel and rim, the reverse with scarlet guilloché and white enamel floral decoration, centred by a oval medaillon painted in camaïeu brun in the manner of Angelica Kauffmann and depicting a pensive young lady and her dog, movement signed, case stamped IP and with London date mark for 1780

Lot Essay

Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807), a Swiss neo-classical painter, was trained by her father before stuying art in Italy. In 1766 she moved to England to pursue a career as a professional artist. She was a founding member of the Royal Academy.
