With nickel-finished jewelled lever movement, the meteorite dial with gilt dauphine hands, aperture for phases of the moon, outer blue ring with gilt date indication, central date hand, in circular case with engraved inscription Corum Meteorite Peary to the bezel, the hooded lugs with one oval blue enamel cartouche with No. 40 to the top, one depicting a map of the world to the buttom, the back secured by six screws and with engraved inscription Dial made of meteorite found by Robert E. Peary cosmic origin impact point 76 4'N. 64 58'W. Cape York, Greenland', protective crown guard, together with a stainless steel and gilt Corum hidden clasp, case, dial and movement signed

Lot Essay

Robert Edwin Peary (1856-1920) was an American explorer generally credited with leading the first party to reach the north pole.

The dial of this watch is made of a fragment of one of the meteorites from the world's largest meteorite shower, totalling 58 tons, discovered by Peary near Cape York during his Greenland expedition in 1894.
