Lot Essay

For the arms, see D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p.349. According to Mr. Howard, there were at least three batches of this service, which would explain the minor variations found on pieces; in particular the colours on the arms can vary because of confusion between tarnished silver which can appear black, and rubbed black which can appear grey. A slightly different version from the J. Louis Binder Collection was sold in thesse Rooms, 17 June 2003, lot 147.
