Lot Essay

The initials V.O.C. are those of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the Dutch East India Company. A very similar dish is in the Hodroff Collection, illustrated by D. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, p.107, no.103. See also ibid., p.39, no.4 for an Arita dish dating to circa 1670 with similar initials encircled by six panels, and it may have been these Arita examples which inspired the Canton artists.
