At least four related series of these dishes were ordered in the 1720's in China, and approximately twenty-three different arms are known, including those of Holland, England, France, Luxembourg, and of numerous Dutch and Flemish provinces and cities. Judging by the spelling of many of these dishes, it would appear they were all made to Dutch order. For a discussion on these dishes, see D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol.I, pp.118 and 119; and C. Le Corbeiller, China Trade Porcelain, Patterns of Exchange, New York, 1974, pp.38 and 39. Two very similar dishes were sold in these Rooms, 16 November 1999, lots 377 and 15 November 2000, lot 298; and a slightly smaller dish from the Benjamin F. Edwards III Collection, part II, was sold in our New York rooms, 22 January 2003, lot 41.
