Art militaire des Chinois, ou recueil d'anciens traités sur la guerre ... on y a joint dix préceptes addressés aux troupes par l'Empereur Yong-Tcheng, Paris: Didot l'ain, 1772. 4 (250 x 200mm). Half title, 33 hand-coloured engraved plates, 3 heightened in gilt or silver, 23 by Boutrois, the others unsigned. (Title in facsimile, without final blank 3D4, E1 with section of lower outer corner and margin torn away and repaired, small whole in final privilege leaf.) Contemporary mottled calf, the flat spine gilt with green morocco lettering-piece (spine scuffed and chipped at head and foot). Provenance: Bibliothéque de Tsarkoe Selo (armorial stamp on half title).
FIRST EDITION. Amiot, a Jesuit father, was born in Toulon in 1718. He reached Macao in 1750 and travelled to Peking on the orders of the Emperor, arriving on 22 August 1751. He was to remain in Peking until his death in 1794. During his forty years in China Amiot's quest for knowledge and capacity for hard work meant that he was personally responsible for a great deal of what the West knew about China. "Les Chinois comptent six ouvrages classiques ou king sur l'art de la guerre, et tout militaire qui aspire aux grades, doit subir un examen sur chacun de ces livres. Le P. Amiot n'a traduit que les trois premiers, avec quelques fragments du quatrime, parce qu'ils contiennent tou te le doctrine des Chinois sur la guerre" (Biographie Générale II, p. 3 74).
