[WYTFLIET, Cornelius (fl. 1597)]. Limes Occidentis Quiuira et Anian, [?Louvain: 1597]. Engraved map of Alaska and the Pacific North West, compass rose (attached to mount on verso by 2 adhesive strips), 231 x 290mm., in window mount.
THE FIRST PRINTED MAP TO FOCUS ON ALASKA. It is extracted from Wytfliet's Descriptionis Ptolemaicae augmentum which was published in 1597 as a supplement to Ptolemy's Geographia. The work is important, however, as the first devoted exclusively to the New World. The exact location of Quivira, an area explored by Coronado, is unknown, although some speculate it was in present-day Kansas. Anian was a mythical kingdom mentioned in Marco Polo's travel accounts. Before it appeared on this map it was generally believed to be located off the north coast of Asia. Schwartz & Ehrenberg p.83.
