ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527-98). L'Epitome du Theatre de l'Univers, Antwerp: Johannes Keerbergen, 1602. 2 parts in one volume, oblong 8° (121 x 170mm). Engraved title, 123 engraved maps by Ferdinand and Ambrosius Arsenius, one hand-coloured, 2 diagrams in the text. (Lightly browned throughout, occasional small stains, one headline shaved, outer margin with wormhole towards the end.) Old-style calf. Provenance: 2-line manuscript inscription in Latin (lower margin of title).
Michel Coignet's new version of the Epitome was first published in Amsterdam in 1601. The small maps, newly engraved by Amrosius and Ferdinand Arsenius, were a marked improvement on the maps engraved by Galle that were included in previous editions. Koeman Ort 64.
