SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616). Works, edited by Lewis Theobald, London: printed for A. Bettesworth, C. Hitch and others, 1733. 7 volumes, 8° (229 x 132mm). Engraved portrait frontisiece by G. Duchange after B. Arlaud. (Half title lacking in volume I, half title in volume IV misbound as volume V and vice-versa, some pencil scoring and annotation, occasional light spotting and browning). Later red calf, covers with repeat gilt roll border of volute, scroll tools and stars, spines in seven panels with gilt floral design, lettering-pieces (some spines lacking lettering-pieces and faded, spine of volume III and some joints splitting, rubbed), gilt edges. Provenance: Raikes Currie (bookplates).
Additionally inscribed on front endpaper: "This copy of Theobald's Shakespeare was in the posession of Her Majesty, Queen Caroline. She died anno 1737 ..." and signed "J. Boaden", with a further note on the portrait. James Boaden (1762-1839) was a biographer and dramatist, and addressed George Steevens, the Shakespearean commentator, in 1796 with A Letter containing a critical examination of the papers of Shakespeare published by Mr Samuel Ireland, where he states his grounds for believing the Ireland papers to be spurious.
Both Jaggard and Lowndes state the above work was issued with plates, although none have appeared at auction except for the portrait. Jaggard p. 499; Lowndes 3, 2259: "An edition of considerable merit, notwithstanding the abuse of it by Pope and Warburton". (7)
