INITIAL O, on the verso of a cutting with PAULINUS OF MILAN, Vita Sancti Ambrosii, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

[Italy, probably Tuscany, 3rd quarter 12th century]
520 x 520mm, a cutting with a single column of 29 lines written in black ink in a round well-spaced caroline minuscule, rubrics in red uncials, ruled in blind, a large foliate initial, 220 x 133mm, with yellow staves with compartments patterned blue and red, against a quartered ground of red and blue, the infill with foliate and interlace against a divided ground of blue, red and green; on the recto the end of the Life of St Nicholas (minor creasing at top left of initial, slight smudging to rubric, final letters of verso and first letters of recto of last 13 lines cropped).

This cutting, part of a single column from a large-format Saints' Lives or Passional arranged according to the Calendar, carries the entries for 6 and 7 December. The initial -- for Ortarius venerabilis patris augustinae ut sicut beati viri anathasius, the beginning of Paulinus' Life of Ambrose -- is characteristically Tuscan in style.
