FUNERAL SERVICE, in an initial C cut from a Choirbook, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[northern Italy, c.1500]
147 x 180mm. A priest asperges a dead lawyer, watched by the mourners and acolytes who have gathered round the bier. The text on the reverse is in an Italian hand and the exuberant renaissance forms of the C also show an Italian origin. The gentle figures, however, and the atmospheric landscape suggest an illuminator familiar with Netherlandish or German styles. The choirbook may have originated in north-eastern Italy. Framed.
