FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, containing 179 poems including the elegies. Since so little of Donne's poetry was published before his death, the importance of this edition has long been recognised, though its appearance, and that of the edition of 1635, drew a petition from John Donne, son of the poet, to the Archbishop of Canterbury, stating that publication had been undertaken 'without anie leave or Authoritie.' This copy contains the two inserted leaves after A4, headed 'The printer to the understanders,' and on the verso of the second, 'Hexastichon Bibliopolae.' Nn1 is a cancellandum. Grolier Wither to Prior 286; Keynes Donne 78; Pforzheimer 296; STC 7045.
