FIRST EDITION. AN EARLY, NON-GEOMETRICAL PAPER BY LOBACHEVSKII. Lobachevskii studied at Kazan University, where he remained as a lecturer after he received his master's degree in 1812, becoming an extraordinary professor in 1814 and subsequently holding a series of positions, including that of rector, at the university throughout his life. This paper, published in the scientific memoirs of the university -- which were founded by Lobachevskii -- is from the earlier part of his career, when subjects other than the non-Euclidean geometry for which he is celebrated absorbed his energies. His exploration of the foundations of mathematics led him to concentrate on the fields of alegbra and the theoretical aspects of infinite series, which are examined in the present work.
