RONSARD, Pierre de (1524-1585) -- Early 17th-century manuscript of verses by Ronsard and contemporary poets (some unidentified), also including passages of prose and a narrative of historical events, n.d. (after 1593), in French, occasional lines and annotations in Latin, neatly written in an early 17th-century hand in brown ink, marginal glosses mostly in red, entitled 'Ronsard' on first page at head, inscription in Latin on front free endpaper, 'Flos illi datus Vendomus, authoru[m]que medulla' [The flower of the Vendôme (i.e.Ronsard) was given to him and the essence of authors], 2 pages written in Latin at end, ownership inscription of 'Le febure de St Benoist' in a later 17th-century hand on back endpaper, altogether approximately 880 pages, 140 x 95 mm, on leaves written on recto and verso. Contemporary French calf elaborately tooled in gilt, flat spine, gilt edges.

The verses include selections of Ronsard's sonnets, translations of Greek epigrams, excerpts of odes and other works including among many examples:

'Marie baisez moy: non ne me baisez pas
Mais tirez moy le coeur de vostre doux haleine...' (Second Livre des amours, Sonnet XLIV, Oeuvres Complets ed. Céard, Simonin and Ménager, 1993, v.I, 214).

'L'image de Thomas me dite quelque chose

(Odes, Livre I, v.I,193).

The manuscript also includes the religious epic 'La Premiere Semaine' by Du Bartas (Guillaume de Saluste, 1544-1590, Gascon diplomatist and poet) and other unidentified works; the text in Latin with which it ends is an extract from Marsilio Ficino, 'De studiosorum sanitate tuenda', Bk 1. A reference to an event in 1593 suggests that the manuscript was written soon afterwards, and the works by Ronsard probably copied from one of the recent editions of his works. The edition of 1584 was the last published in his lifetime. After his death several were published between 1587- 1609.
