ANDERSON, John (1833-1900). 2 volumes, 4° (354 x 260mm). Half-titles and corrigenda leaves. Folding lithographic map hand-coloured in outline, 85 lithographic plates by and after C. Berjeau, J.G. Keulemans et al., 50 hand-coloured and 4 double-page, woodcut illustrations and letterpress tables in the text. (Occasional dustmarking, particularly affecting the plate vol., marginal tears on I/2π2-4). Original brown cloth, boards blocked in blind, spines lettered in gilt, most gatherings unopened (extremities a little rubbed and bumped, text volume with splits on joints and tears at foot of spine). Provenance: Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh (inkstamps on titles, scored through and inscribed 'Duplicate') -- Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow (bookplates dated in manuscript '25'; small inkmarks on titles and shelfmarks on spines).
FIRST EDITION. 'This important work furnishes the zoological results of two expeditions to S.W. China (Burma border) in 1868 and 1875' (Wood, p.623). Section I deals with vertebrata, and was written by Anderson (with the exception of Cheiroptera, written by G.E. Dobson), and the ornithological portion -- in which 'the identifications of the birds were verified by Mr R. Bowdler Sharpe, who has carefully worked out the literature' (I, p.xxiv) -- includes the 'description of one new species of Sun-bird' (Zimmer). Section II -- invertebrata--is composed of 3 subsections: 'Mollusca' by G. Nevill; 'Insecta' by F. Moore; 'Crustacea' by J. Wood-Mason. According to Nissen, only 250 copies were printed.
