[Jacobus van den Kieboom (publisher)]. La Connoissance des Pavillons ou Bannieres, que la plûpart des nations arborent en mer. Amsterdam: Jacques van den Kieboom, 1737.
4° (246 x 185mm). Title in red and black. 90 engraved plates of flags, 1 engraved illustration. (Small section of text leaf A2 torn away and neatly repaired with loss of a few characters, outer margin of plate 1 torn with slight loss to image and neatly repaired.) Contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments, the first lettered 'J.A.C. DE CALLENB 1746', light brown morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration (spine and extremities rubbed and slightly chipped, upper joints slightly split). Provenance: J.A.C. de Callenb[?erg] (binding).
A FINE AND RARE WORK illustrating and describing 214 flags used by shipping which is sometimes ascribed to Nicolas Aubin (see Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich). The flags are of the various maritime nations as well as the numerous mercantile companies of the period. The provenance is interesting, and although the individual 'J.A.C.' cannot be identified, the Callenberg family include a number of distinguished 18th-century members: a German traveller and writer, a Dutch admiral and two German theologians (one of whom was also an orientalist).
