Series title, dedication leaf, advertisement leaf, volume title, advertisement leaf, 41 hand-coloured engraved plates by and after Donovan, some plates watermarked, 'J.Whatman 1801' or '1803', or 'E&P 1801'. (Lightly browned, most noticeable on text leaves, occasional light minor spotting, smudging or offsetting, small losses to some lower outer corners, some restored to size, small paper remnant affecting image of Papilio Antinous.) Modern half green morocco gilt.
First edition of Donovan's beautiful work, dedicated to Sir Joseph Banks and including butterflies and other insects from Australia copied from his collection. Donovan intended this work to be seen as volume I of An Epitome of the Insects of Asia, forming the first part of a General Illustration of Entomology. Nissen ZBI1145; Fergusson 408.
